Western Australia's Home Battery Rebate Set to Begin on 1 July 2025

Starting from July 1, 2025, the Western Australian Government will be offering 20,000 rebates for residential battery installations. These rebates will provide up to $5,000 for Synergy customers and up to $7,500 for Horizon Power customers, with the exact rebate amount depending on the battery’s capacity.

Synergy customers can receive a rebate of $500 per kilowatt hour (kWh) for a maximum of 10 kWh, benefiting up to 19,000 households. On the other hand, Horizon Power customers can qualify for a higher rebate of $750 per kWh, also capped at 10 kWh, with up to 1,000 eligible households.

To further encourage participation, a similar number of no-interest loans of up to $10,000 will be made available for households with low to moderate incomes.

The scheme will be introduced in several phases, starting on or before July 1, 2025. It will be managed by a third-party provider with experience in handling similar programs.

WA Government’s Residential Battery Rebate – Up to $7,500 Off

If you’re a homeowner in Perth or regional WA, you’re also eligible for Western Australia’s Residential Battery Rebate, starting 1 July 2025. This is in addition to the federal subsidy, creating even more value for households ready to invest in solar batteries.

WA Battery Rebate details :

  • Synergy customers : $500 per kWh (up to 10kWh = $5,000)
  • Horizon Power customers : $750 per kWh (up to 10kWh = $7,500)
  • Applies to new solar + battery installs or retrofitted battery systems
  • Optional interest-free loans between $2,000 and $10,000 for eligible households

The rebate supports up to 20,000 WA homes and will be means-tested to help ensure accessibility for low- and middle-income households.

Eligible Applicants

  • Residential properties in Western Australia, including those used for home businesses.
  • The property must have a residential electricity account with Synergy or Horizon Power.
  • Excluded from the scheme are properties owned by State, Commonwealth, or Local Government entities, financial institutions, telecommunications companies, and mining or resource companies.
  • Each property connection can receive only one rebate or loan. However, landlords with a long-term tenancy agreement may qualify for an additional rebate.
  • While all eligible households can apply for the rebate, loans are restricted to households below a government-determined income threshold.
  • The minimum loan amount available is $2,000.

Interest-Free Solar Battery Loans

In addition to the battery rebate, the government will also offer no-interest loans of up to $10,000, which can be repaid over up to 10 years. These loans will be available to eligible homeowners to help cover the cost of the battery. 20,000 loans will be available to low to medium-income households and homeowners will be means-tested to see if they qualify. No details have been provided thus far on the threshold of this household income. New, additional and replacement solar panels will also be eligible for the loan if they are installed as part of a package involving the installation of a battery system.

Approved Equipment & Technical Specs

  • Approved List : Only batteries and inverters on the official approved equipment list will qualify (the list will be published before launch).
  • Minimum Size : Battery systems must be at least 5 kWh usable capacity. (This aligns with typical home batteries. Batteries below 5 kWh will not qualify).
  • Standards : Batteries must meet Australian and local grid standards. In practice, this means using CEC-accredited, SAA-approved equipment. International or off-spec products won’t qualify.
  • Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Ready : Systems must be VPP-capable. That means they must be able to connect to the internet and respond to grid signals in real time. This ensures they can join future energy-sharing networks to help stabilize the grid.
  • Safety/Warranty : Installations must meet all safety, performance, and warranty standards (details still in development). Installers will test and certify VPP connectivity and compliance.
  • Batteries capacity : With a larger capacity than 10kWh, that are on the approved equipment list (list not announced yet), are eligible for the maximum rebate of $5000 or $7500. The national average battery size is between 12-13 kWh.
  • Existing vs New : New battery purchases, additions (expanding an existing system) or replacements (swapping an old battery for a new one) are all eligible. (You cannot claim a rebate simply for maintaining an old battery)

Combining the WA and Federal Solar Battery Rebates?

The Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program offers a 30% upfront discount on approved solar battery systems for eligible households across Australia.

This is a game-changer for homeowners already using solar power. By storing excess solar energy during the day and using it at night, households can drastically cut down their reliance on the grid and save up to $2,300 per year on electricity bills

Program highlights :

  • 30% upfront rebate on battery installation costs
  • Open to homeowners with existing or new solar systems
  • Designed to help install 1 million batteries by 2030
  • Improve your energy security and backup during blackouts
  • Lower your carbon footprint with renewable energy storage

How to Apply for the WA Solar Battery Rebate

To take advantage of the WA Solar Battery Rebate, follow these simple steps:

  • 1. Assess Your Solar Setup : Ensure your current or planned solar system is compatible with battery storage.
  • 2. Choose an Approved Battery System : Select a rebate-eligible solar battery that meets government regulations.
  • 3. Get Quotes from Accredited Installers : Work with a CEC-accredited installer like Sunselect to ensure your system qualifies.
  • 4. Submit Your Application : Apply through the official WA Government rebate portal (when available) with necessary documentation.
  • 5. Schedule Installation : Once approved, install your battery system and start saving!

Why You Shouldn’t Wait

Delaying installation until the scheme launches may cost you more :

  • Limited Availability : Only 20,000 rebates will be available, and demand is expected to be extremely high.
  • Priority Access : Those who register early will be in the best position to secure the rebate.
  • Energy Independence : Store excess solar energy, protect against blackouts, and maximize your savings.

Installing a hybrid system now locks in immediate solar savings and positions you to claim the battery rebate as soon as it opens.

Conclusion

With the WA Home Battery Rebate launching on 1 July 2025, Western Australians have a unique opportunity to make home energy storage more affordable and accessible. This initiative not only supports households in reducing their reliance on the grid and lowering electricity bills but also plays a vital role in the state’s transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy future.

Whether you're looking to enhance the value of your solar investment or improve your energy independence, the rebate offers a compelling incentive to act. But with demand likely to surge once the program opens, it’s wise to start preparing now, research eligible systems, speak with accredited installers like Sunselect and position yourself to take full advantage of the rebate as soon as it goes.
